王蒙，河北南皮人，1934年生于北京。青年时代参加中国共产党的地下工作，1949年以后曾任共青团北京市东四区委副书记、伊犁巴彦岱公社二大队副大队长、《人民文学》杂志主编、中国作家协会常务副主席、文化部部长、全国政协文史和学习委员会主任委员等职。1955年开始发表作品，涵盖小说、散文、诗歌、文学理论、历史文化等诸多领域，多次获得全国优秀中短篇小说奖、茅盾文学奖等各种文学奖项。王蒙的创作以小说为主，兼及古典文学、社会历史、思想文化。他的创作紧扣时代脉搏，主题深刻、风格鲜明、见解独到、别具一格。主要作品编为《王蒙文集》50卷，2020年1月出版。
2019年9月，获得全国人大常委会授予的“人民艺术家”国家荣誉称号。

早在20 世纪80 年代，我希望有机会能写我们这一代人，写我们所经历的革命和新生活，写我们的心灵史，写人类的这种刻骨铭心的经验，写天若有情天亦老、人间正道是沧桑—这是和李贺合写的极好的两句诗。
于是有了“季节”系列，从《恋爱的季节》《失态的季节》，然后到《踌躇的季节》，直到这回的《狂欢的季节》。我花了八年多时间，写了一百三十万字。
这不好写。写旧社会好办，写妓女写僧道写土匪写乞丐写国王写奸细写狐仙写疯子傻子写二性子变态都好办，都可以纳入呼唤革命（或恐惧革命）的历史潮流里。社会主义就不能这么写，迄今，写社会主义生活的要不捧上天，人间天堂，个个天使；要不就狗血喷头，骂入十八层地狱，念念有词如巫妖毒咒。
不，这不真实，这当然不是我的选择。我希望我能写出真相，我能为历史提供一份证词。历史就是历史，它伟大而又曲折，平凡而又惊心动魄，艰难而又趣味盎然，荒唐而又严丝合缝、无懈可击。
我不是历史大变革中的遗老遗少，我不是书斋里的兰菊文竹，我不是远庖厨而又善美食的谦谦君子，更不是咬牙切齿而又昏头昏脑的偏执狂与夸大狂，即在庄严的历史面前自以为小葱拌豆腐一清二白，解决复杂的问题如探囊取物的、保守的或时髦的牛皮大王。我是历史的积极参与者、弄潮者，有时候被迫晒干岸儿，也至少是观察者与思考者。历史从来与我息息相关，痛痒相通，成败相连，得失相与。我有手的经验，手的感觉，手的反应，手的喜怒哀乐。把这些写出来，是我的历史责任，是我对后人的交代。
于是有了“季节”系列。它是我的怀念，它是我的辩护，它是我的豪情，它也是我的反思乃至忏悔。它是我的眼泪，它是我的调笑，它是我的游戏也是我心头流淌的血，它更是我的和我们的经验。它是我的过程，它是我的混乱和清明，它是我的寄语和诘难，它是我的纪念和旧梦、新梦、美梦、噩梦，它是我的独语、呓语、禅语与献词，它是我的软弱和顽强，理智和痴迷。它是我为画龙而泼下的成吨的墨，却又止于所当止所不可不止。历史并未终结，经验仍在积累，小说还要写下去，“睛”并非现在的作者所已有。在一浪又一浪的季节与语言后边，让我们共同去试图点上“睛”，让我们共同期待着“龙”的飞翔吧。
又，曹雪芹云：满纸荒唐言，一把辛酸泪！都云作者痴，谁解其中味？其实即使作者不痴，作者很精很油很自在很智慧，又能怎样？
两年前我写过一首旧体诗，有两句是：落叶飘零风送雾，长图裁制血抽丝。呜呼，已经爬了太多的格子了，不知道会耗费读者多少时光、目力、财力，愧对读者之余，就不要再絮叨了吧。
